busy fabulous wedding photographer

Record breaking busy.  Like busier then ever before.  And I am no stranger to extreme busy-ness. This year we have completed a whopping 58 weddings to date, with 3 more to go before the year is over.  A full 50 of those weddings occurred between May 1 to October 31. That is 50 weddings in 26 weeks…  A lot, especially considering that each wedding takes about a week to shoot & edit.  Of course I did not do this alone, huge thanks go out to Carla, Joel, Megan & Stella.  Plus Jeremy too.  Phew what a year.  And although it is not over… the crazy season is officially done, and I am feeling pretty satisfied & pleased with myself and our team.  It has been a great privilege to be a part of 58  ‘best day ever’s’, and I am looking forward to the final 3 weddings of 2015.

2016 brides – you are right around the corner… get ready…set…go!

When magazine editor Carmelina contacted us a few weeks ago to inquire if she could publish a few photos in the upcoming issues of The Wedding Planner GTA magazine, and on line at their site http://theweddingplannermagazine.webs.com/, we were excited and naturally we said ‘YES’!  But when we received the request for 47 photos – well we were a wee bit shocked – in a happy way.  Usually magazines request between 1 – 5 images.  Hello 47!

The first few of these 47 photos are now available in the summer issue  of The Wedding Planner GTA, hot off the presses.  Click the link below & see if you can spot the Anne Edgar Photography brides & grooms.

I’ll keep you posted when the next batch of images get published.   2012 brides you will want to check back – odds are good you will be in a magazine!

The Wedding Planner GTA will be sold after June 1st, at all Chapters and Indigo stores across Ontario, pick up your copy!

just 1 tip for great ‘getting ready’ photos

getting ready, photography, photos, wedding, wedding tips

Ok – you have the best suite at the hotel.  Maybe a fabulous b&b loaded with charm.  Or your child hood home – so significant to you.  Any way you choose it, you know it is the perfect place for your ‘getting ready’ photos.  Artistic images of your dress hanging beautifully from the thing in the place… the girls gracefully helping you into the gown, pinning the boutonniere on your father’s lapel.  Amazing moments, pictured perfectly in your mind.  And they can be.  Here is a small tip to make sure those priceless moments look as good as they feel.

We know you are thinking of a million details at this early stage in the day.  Here is another for your list… (sorry!) Your entourage of bridesmaids travel with their own small mountain of possessions.  Shoes & coats.  Purses, bags & bundles.  Fully loaded suitcases large enough for an extended vacation.  And that is just the beginning.  Everything in those bags & bundles quickly explodes into every room in your suite / house.   So it is no surprise that when the photographer arrives, it looks like a hurricane just blew through.  And if you think on it for any length of time at all, you will quickly realise that this is probably not the idyllic & beautiful photo environment you had in mind.

So what to do?  Well, let everyone know that photos will be happening in this very spot, & soon.  It won’t take long for all the girls to wisk away their bits & pieces.  Because a sweet request for a pretty  photo place is something that every bridesmaid will understand.

Add these to the morning of ‘to do’ list:)

1)      Make the bed.  Do the dishes.  (duh!)

2)      Clear away the clutter off the counters, table tops etc

3)      Have an empty closet prepared for all of the bags & bundles, so they have an out of sight place to go.  (corner of the room does not count, invariable that WILL be the corner that shows in the photo…)

4)      Close the closet / bathroom doors.  Hide the laundry hamper.

5)      Jump in your gown & let the fun begin.

This was a great one…one of the best in fact.  I can’t even put it into words, but I think it had a lot to do with the real & raw emotions that every person present could feel.

Also – I really really loved the cannelloni.  Thank you Jessica & Josh!

Is the second shooter worth the extra $$? (aka 1 versus 2 photographer wedding packages)

one, packages, photographers, photography, second, shooters, two, wedding

As a busy wedding photography studio, we received many inquiries per week, with brides typically asking a range of questions from ‘is my date available?’, to photographic style,  to questions about our packages and promotions.  But this particular inquiry made me pause for a moment

Hi there, I am wondering if you are available September 7 2013 to shoot a wedding? Do you typically use two photographers to shoot a wedding? Thanks very much

I was struck by the fact  that the only info the bride required from me was 1) is the date available, and 2) if there would be 2 photographers.

This second photographer trend has really only been around these last 5 years or so.  Which makes me wonder, why has the second shooter scenario recently become such a priority to brides?

Our pov on all things wedding is that the bride is always right.  Her day, her way.  Period.

But the second shooter debate is one area I wonder about.  Why has this 2 photographer phenomenon suddenly become  industry standard?

Now I understand the benefit of 2 angles captured.  Of peace of mind that 2 cameras are recording the event.  Even 2 different point of views, and  2 shooting styles.    Extra hands to hold & carry.

But what about the expense of 2 talented pro photographers?  Because if you think of it – if one fabulous, talented photographer that is worthy to record your wedding day costs on average $2000-$4000, then logically, 2 such worthy photogs working together, should run in the 4-8 k region.  Right?

So then how are some photographers able to offer 2 photographer –  packages  for $2500, $1500, and sometimes even less?  What is being diluted in the rest of the photo package to squeeze 2 ‘pro’ photogs a living?  Well talent for sure.  Equipment definitely.  Experience – absolutely.  Really –  if you thought these ‘pro’ photogs could earn $2000 per wedding each on their own, don’t you think they would do it, rather than splitting the profit with another photographer?

So what is better – 2 $1000 (x 2 =$2000) photogs, or one $2000 pro photographer?

At the end of the day, your wedding photos will only be as good as your photographer’s ability.  Having more photographers won’t make the images any better, tho it probably guarantees more of them.  What matters most to you?  Thousands of mediocre images, or hundreds of amazing ones?

I am pretty sure you see where I am going with this… so if you want a recommendation from a photographer who has seen it all, here it is.   Dedicate your photo budget towards getting the biggest, most fantastic  talent.  One super awesome photographer beats 2 mediocre ones.  Hands down.  Every time.

Here at Anne Edgar Photography – I am proud of the affordable & talented expertise we bring to our clients.  My staff & I are more than capable of single handedly capturing the largest high end events, in a manner that surpasses our clients high expectations.  And we can prove it in the dozens of sample wedding albums photographed in just that manner.   But in the interests of supplying clients with the wedding experience they are demanding, and because the client is always right, we also offer 2, 3, and 4 photographer options.  Our emphasis is always on ensuring that the primary photographer is of the upmost ability.  Second shooters are simplicity  the icing on the cake.  Visit our website for more information any time.  Happy wedding planning!

blizzards + burgers + belly laughs – how will you celebrate YOUR winter wedding? [Hauser Hall & Wildcraft, Waterloo]

For all you super cool winter brides, here is a fun little snapshot of Leslie & Mike’s  frosty wedding… brought to you courtesy of Anne Edgar Photography.

The festivities began  at Leslie’s parents home – the perfect place for a photographer to capture all of the fun, chaos & anticipation of a girl on her way to walk down the aisle.  Detail shots, pix of the bride dressing, photo ops with bridesmaids.  Fairly standard stuff.

Except that Leslie & Mike were thinking a bit more outside the box for their fab winter wedding… and  had something  more interesting in mind for their wedding party.  Instead of heading straight for the venue,   the bride & girls  headed to Wildcraft, where they met up with the groom & groomsmen for some beverages, gourmet burgers, & belly laughs.

As the sun was setting, we headed thru the snow storm to beautiful Hauser Hall for some aisle walking & ring trading.    Champagne toasts, laughter, and naturally – photos in the snow were mandatory.  Dinner & dancing, love & laughter wrapped up a perfect snowy winter day.

Congrats Leslie & Mike!

btw – the officiant?  that’s my friend Martti from Kettle Creek Weddings!
